CONFERENCE Call for Abstracts:

World Sustainable Built Environment Conference: Beyond 2020

The World Sustainable Built Environment (WSBE) conference, BEYOND 2020 will be held 9th - 11th June 2020 in Gothenburg (Sweden).

The overall ambition of this conference is to collectively formulate a transformational plan and set of commitments for the built environment to support the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The call for abstracts is now open until 31st August 2019.

BEYOND 2020 is centred around goal number 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities" as the focal point to deliver and apply solutions for a more sustainable built environment. Around goal number 11, we have identified 10 other goals that are strongly related to goal 11 and these are highly aligned by stakeholders and activities in the built environment with the achievement of 'sustainable cities and communities'. The Scientific Committee is seeking contributions addressing identified challenges and demonstrating innovations that begin to solve these challenges.

The conference is part of the renowned SBE conference series and considered to be one of the world's most prestigious conferences and forums in the field of sustainable built environment. It is organised by Chalmers University of Technology and Research Institutes of Sweden, with the support of Johanneberg Science Park and The City of Gothenburg.

Building-Related Research: New Context, New Challenges

Raymond J. Cole (University of British Columbia) reflects on the key challenges raised in the 34 commissioned essays for Buildings & Cities 5th anniversary. Not only are key research issues identified, but the consequences of changing contexts for conducting research and tailoring its influence on society are highlighted as key areas of action.

Lessons from Disaster Recovery: Build Better Before

Mary C. Comerio (University of California, Berkeley) explains why disaster recovery must begin well before a disaster occurs. The goal is to reduce the potential for damage beforehand by making housing delivery (e.g. capabilities and the physical, technical and institutional infrastructures) both more resilient and more capable of building back after disasters.
