Next Built Conference: Call for Abstracts
Deadline for abstracts: 05 December 2025
The 3rd International Conference "Challenges for the NEXT generation BUILT Environment" (NEXTBUILT 2026) takes place 4-5 June 2026 and is hosted by the University of Bologna and the Next Built Observatory.
Housing has emerged globally as one of the most pressing social and economic challenges. The supply of affordable, adequate and sustainable housing is struggling to keep pace with demand. Ageing, inefficient and inadequate dwelling stocks, partially influenced by the dynamics of the property market, as well as the need for climate adaptation, and the rising cost of construction materials, are putting significant pressure on the construction sector.
The conference is organised with 4 themes. Abstracts are sought across 4 topics:
- Room for housing: reflecting on affordability, equity and resilience
- Livability, comfort and health: reflecting on the nature of the built environment
- Process workflow and services: reflecting on innovation in the building sector
- Materials without borders: reflecting on reuse and impacts
All abstracts will be double-blind peer reviewed by the Scientific Committee. NEXT BUILT ensures a fair and transparent process is undertaken by all the members involved.

COP30 Report
Matti Kuittinen (Aalto University) reflects on his experience of attending the 2025 UN Conference of the Parties in Belém, Brazil. The roadmaps and commitments failed to deliver the objectives of the 2025 Paris Agreement. However, 2 countries - Japan and Senegal - announced they are creating roadmaps to decarbonise their buildings. An international group of government ministers put housing on the agenda - specifying the need for reduced carbon and energy use along with affordability, quality and climate resilience.
Building-Related Research: New Context, New Challenges
Raymond J. Cole (University of British Columbia) reflects on the key challenges raised in the 34 commissioned essays for Buildings & Cities 5th anniversary. Not only are key research issues identified, but the consequences of changing contexts for conducting research and tailoring its influence on society are highlighted as key areas of action.
